about

This is the title track of the record. This was written in September, 2011 after reading about the Beothuks, a lost native culture from Newfoundland. Shanawdithit, the last known Beothuk, died in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1829. Much of the Beothuk language was subsequently lost. I had much of the verses/melody written before stumbling onto the "Beothuk Words" title. This song became about the preservation of moments.

Recorded and produced by Dale Murray at his home studio in Port Howe, NS on September 17th, 2011. Christina Martin provides the lovely duet vocals.

Keith Mullins on Drums, Fleur Mainville on fiddle/strings. Steven on piano/guitar.

lyrics

"Penny for your thoughts?"
"I think you hurt yourself too often.
Spend the penny on a drink,
so you don't have to hear the words."
We're smoking in your car
But this will also be forgotten
When the clouds were made of cotton
And the bruises made of berries
That stained your lips
In the summer

You tell me that you love me
I wish you'd tell me that in person
Instead of when I'm dreaming
When you're written by my brain
You're in the hallway cold
And my heartbeat when it's stopping
When the clouds are made of cotton
And the bruises made of berries
That stained your lips
In the summer

(Chorus)
Sing me in your tongue
& Sweet Beothuk Words will echo
Winter on the Exploits River
Nothing's really lost, you know

There's an aching in your bones
And there's a static in the speakers
And investigator ghosts
Looking for the living proof
There's a clearing by your house
That the seasons have forgotten
Where the clouds are made of cotton
And the bruises made of berries
That stained your lips
In the summer

(Chorus)
Sing me in your tongue
& Sweet Beothuk Words will echo
Winter on the Exploits River
Nothing's really lost, you know

Sing me in your tongue
Say the words and I'll deliver
Winter on the Exploits River
Nothing's really lost, you know?
